A small press in West Jordan, Utah

Set the type.
Pull the proof.
Invoice the story.

INKWELL PUBLICATIONS LLC is a small press shop at 6057 W Miners Mesa Dr, West Jordan - 84081-8120, United States (US), where families, schools, local groups and independent authors bring unfinished manuscripts and leave with bound books. We arrange community anthologies, family histories and coordinated print runs for people who care about paper, care about names spelled right, and care about a proof they can hold before anything reaches a shelf. Every project begins at the same desk: set the type, pull one proof, read it out loud together, and only then go to press. Read the full list of services

The proof desk registry

Six jobs walk across this desk

Each job is a printed sheet clipped to the desk at a different height, because each one arrives at a different stage. Some come as a shoebox of letters, some as a finished manuscript that needs only a clean plate and a binding decision. We keep the order honest and the names spelled as the family spells them.

Community Anthologies

Group collections for schools, libraries, churches, writing circles and neighborhood projects. We gather the submissions, sequence them into a book that reads well from front to back, and return a proof to every contributing author before the run begins.

Family History Books

Genealogy binders and legacy volumes turned into printed heirlooms. We work with scanned photographs, hand lettered charts and decades of notes, and we build a page order that reads like a story rather than a filing cabinet.

Print Coordination

We sit between your manuscript and the press and keep the schedule from drifting. Paper stock, trim size, cover stock and finishing decisions are talked through in plain language, then confirmed on a printed spec sheet you can keep.

Editing and Proofing

Line editing, consistency passes and a final read against the pulled proof. We mark corrections in red pencil exactly as a shop marks a galley, so every change is visible to the author before it becomes permanent in ink.

Cover and Layout Design

Interior typography, running heads, chapter openings and a cover that matches the book rather than a passing trend. Everything is set with real type and checked at true trim size before a single plate is made.

Distribution Support

Once the books are bound, we help them travel. Carton counts, shipping labels, consignment paperwork and a simple record of where each box went, so a first-time publisher knows exactly what left the shop and when.

INKWELL PUBLICATIONS LLC opens its winter print calendar, reserving proof desk time for family histories finished before the holidays and for anthology projects that want a spring release.

The press book, kept the old way

Every job that leaves the shop gets a line in the press book: the title, the trim, the paper, the count, and the date the last carton closed. A community anthology and a family history sit on the same page, side by side, because the shop treats them with the same patience. When a client asks what happened to their second proof, we open the book and read the line back. No cloud account required, no deletion, no quiet change to a job number. The press book is the reason we can promise that a reprinted edition matches the first one years later.

What actually happens in a small press shop

A press of any size runs on sequence. There is a moment to gather, a moment to set, a moment to pull one proof and hold it under the lamp, and a moment to commit. When those moments are skipped, a book arrives with a wrong dedication page or a cover in the wrong red. When they are kept, a family opens a box and finds the thing they were trying to say.

The gathering table

Community anthology projects almost always start on a folding table in a library meeting room. We bring a simple submission form, a copy of the style sheet, and a plain explanation of what a proof is. Authors learn early that the red marks are not criticism; they are the shop talking back. For our Community Anthologies work, we keep a paper index for every contributor and a spreadsheet for every deadline, and we never merge the two, because names on paper are easier to defend when the final pages are read aloud.

The family table

Family history work is slower and more personal. A query arrives with a box of photographs, a memory stick, and a printed index someone typed in 1998. We scan, we caption, we ask which surname should lead the spine. The Family History Books service exists because a book is the only version of a family record that survives a dead hard drive. We treat scanned letters as artifacts, quote them only where the file is legible, and ask for a second reader before we print a name.

The proof under the lamp

Every project passes through Editing and Proofing. The first pass is a structural read; the second is a consistency pass on names, dates and chapter numbers; the third is a hard read against the pulled proof with a straight edge. We mark in red so the author can see the difference between what was written and what the page can hold. This is the part clients remember, because it is the moment a manuscript becomes a plan.

The plate and the roller

Behind the desk sits the press: a platen, a roller bed, and a small ink drum that needs cleaning more often than anyone expects. Our Print Coordination work is mostly talking, because the printer needs a clean file, an honest paper choice and a schedule that allows for a second proof. We translate between author vocabulary and press vocabulary without ever hiding a cost on the spec sheet.

The cover and the case

A cover is the first page of a book and the last thing set. Our Cover and Layout Design service keeps interior typography consistent with the cover so the book feels like one object. We test a printed sample at true trim, check the ink density under the shop lamp, and change the type size if the spine text will not fit. No cover leaves the desk without a physical mockup in hand.

The cartons out the door

Binding is only half the finish. Distribution Support covers the carton count, the shipping labels, the consignment sheets for local shops, and the small record book that tracks where each box went. For first-time publishers this is often the most reassuring service we offer, because it turns a van full of books into a list that can be checked off.

A small press for community anthologies, family histories and honest print coordination. We work from a proof desk in West Jordan, Utah, and we believe a book should be read once on paper before it is read by anyone else.
